“Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.”
John 1:48 KJV
These were the words of Jesus to Nathanael who Philip had testified to and brought to Christ. These words amazed Nathanael, for he wondered how and where did Jesus see him?
Let’s picture him sitting under the fig tree, and in the midst of all the beautiful chaos and people, Jesus saw him. I mean, what are the chances of THAT happening? We cannot really ascertain for sure if Jesus laid his physical eyes on him under the fig tree. I will like to believe Christ referred to his heart.
The interesting thing is, not only did Jesus see him, He told him who he was and praised his integrity.
“Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!”
John 1:47 KJV
Can this get any better?
Now back to where it all started;
And Jesus said to him, I saw you before Philip did under the fig tree.
Nathanael was a straightforward man. He was no hypocrite nor of double standards. He wouldn’t look one way while going the other way. Guile means devious or crafty, none of which could be found in him. I believe Philip knew the manner of man he was and thought it was the best decision to bring him aboard. Note, he was yet to become a believer in Jesus but he was not a Pharisee.
Imagine yourself to be in Nathaniel’s shoes and Jesus saying to you, I saw you before you came to me. I see you when you dealing with drugs addiction, pornography, maliciousness, strife, hatred, pride, greed, covetousness, the love of money, lack of integrity, lies and dishonesty. When you slapped your neighbour without provocation, beat up the wife He placed in your care, took a bribe to bear false witness, He was there, watching and it broke His heart.
He sees us when we struggling with lust and unclean thoughts.
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
Hebrews 4:12-13 NLT
Jesus is still saying, I see you! I see you trying to navigate life’s difficulties. I see you when you try to uphold my words, I see you propagate my love to the world, I see you in your highs, and in your lows, I am there. I see you on the mountain tops and in the valley lows. I see you when doubts and fear trail you and your secret tears fall upon my loving heart.
I see you and know who you are. I know what you have been up to and the reputation you have built for yourself. I see all you do even before you knew me or believed. I have always been there. I am A God who cares
I know you more than you know yourself. I know you by name and have called you to be mine. I know you even to the number of hair strands you have got.
He is not a faraway God who is oblivious of our actions until we go crying to Him in prayers. No! He is in us and with us. He sees it all and knows it all. He is also not a boogeyman lurking in the shadows, He is ever-present and you can feel Him if you are present and attentive. You are not alone.
When you have agonised because you couldn’t attain fulfilment of purpose in your heart, He heard your groaning. He is mindful of every true seeker seeking Him, never far away. He is the unseen force by which our heart is moved.
His eyes are on our ways and He sees all we do.
“You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night. You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong. I am determined not to sin in what I say.
I have followed your commands, which keep me from following cruel and evil people. My steps have stayed on your path; I have not wavered from following you.”
Psalms 17:3-5 NLT
Will God be proud of the path you have chosen now? Everything we do on earth, has its harvest. For we will all be rewarded according to the fruits of our deeds. Please examine yourself, what seeds are you planting now because the fruits you will reap depends on it;
“You have all wisdom and do great and mighty miracles. You see the conduct of all people, and you give them what they deserve.”
Jeremiah 32:19 NLT
Let me categorically state here that unless your conscience has been thoroughly subjected to the cleansing of the word, you cannot rely on it to rule you. Only the word of God can show us the path of light and truth.
Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted.”
Titus 1:15 NLT
Now this post is not for condemnation but to remind you of the righteous One by whose righteousness we are made holy and freed from all guilt and sin. We are completely Bound by grace
This is to spur you to get rid of all . uncleanliness and filth in your closet.
These were his instructions to them: “You must always act in the fear of the Lord, with faithfulness and an undivided heart.”
2 Chronicles 19:9 NLT
Even as He has chosen us;
“Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.”
Ephesians 1:4 NLT
It is God’s desire for us to be saved and made righteous in Christ but we have to be willing to give up vices that undermines the finished work of Christ in our lives as believers. For Christ has empowered us for good works.
Search your heart , dearly beloved and examine your ways. Are you on the path of righteousness?
“For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not turned from my God to follow evil. I am blameless before God; I have kept myself from sin.
The Lord rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence. To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity.”
Psalms 18:21, 23-25 NLT
He saw you and still sees you;
“For God watches how people live; he sees everything they do.”
Job 34:21 NLT
Think upon this verse-
“The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.”
Proverbs 15:3 NLT
Finally Dear friends, I pray you become a Christian indeed. One through which all men will see and experience the righteousness of Christ.
I pray in whatever season you find yourself, you hunger and thirst for righteousness. I pray you stay on the path of good and refuse to compromise to the standards of this vain world. I pray you ever readily run to Him and rely on His grace and mercy to set you right whenever you fall short for we all fall short.
I pray Christ will not find you wanting when He returns. Amen
