Assumptions!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭3:5-6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I have been meditating on this verse all week. I recently wrote it on a sticky note and placed on my mirror. It would serve as a constant reminder every time I am faced with a decision no matter how insignificant/huge it may seem.

As we step into unknown territories, it is normal for us to make assumptions based on past experiences, people’s counsel, experts, our human wisdom. While this isn’t bad in itself after all God gave us brains to use it.

But Nevertheless, God expects us to come to Him first and find out His will about the situation. DAVID, won his battles because he made a habit of consulting with God first. He always enquired for specific instructions. As a successful warrior, it wouldn’t have been out of place if he applied his old tactics or war wisdom to future battles. But David treaded a different path. He sought God’s counsel at every new turn or twist.

When David sought the Lord and listened to him (by acting on what God said to do), he had victory and success, and saw provision and breakthrough.

And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him. 1Samuel 18:14 ESV

Following Jesus doesn’t mean our lives will be free from challenges and problems. It means that we have the Lord Almighty with us in our challenges, whom we can lean on, trust, ask for help.

As Christians, we should be asking specific questions in seeking guidance. Father, where do I live? Who do I marry? is this job your will for me? Should I go ahead with this visit? What should I eat today? We might think some questions are irrelevant but Nothing could be farther from the truth. God is interested in every detail of our lives.

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭37:23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God desires we live our best life possible and He is ever ready to steer us in the direction that would make this a reality.

God first

When we don’t seek God’s counsel, we tend to fall into preventable errors and push ourselves down a rabbit hole. A prominent study here is Joshua and the Israelites. They relied on their wisdom and were misled by the Gibeonites.

“And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord. And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours and that they dwelt among them.”
‭‭Joshua‬ ‭9:14, 16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭14:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬
You may have a good plan but it may not necessarily be God’s plan.It is possible you are backing up the wrong tree. Human knowledge is limited. We can be able to plan, project and assume but no one knows for certain what would come about the next minute. Our best bet is to tap into the knowledge of the all- Knowing God and rely totally on His instructions.

Therefore, how do we effectively seek God’s counsel?

Simple – By submitting to the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is ever present speaking and guiding. Are we listening? During the days of David, they had to consult a priest to hear from God. This time, we have direct access to the Spirit of God in the person of the Holy Spirit. Our Lord Jesus Christ sent us a helper who is to guide us into all truths. He is to teach us what we don’t know and alert us when there is danger. He would also open our eyes to the hidden intent of people we relate with. The Holy Spirit has all the information you seek, Just ask.

What you lean on is what you trust in. What are you elaing on today?!

Pls pray with me!

Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit, my Senior partner and guide. Please, may He be my eyes where cannot see, my ears when I cannot hear. Help me not to lean on my understanding. Give me the wisdom to turn You at every point in time and the brokenness of heart to surrender to the Holy Spirit. Amen!

“Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.”

“Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.”

What you said about David turning to the Lord at every step rather than relying on His wisdom and battle tactics really stood out to me. I do think we can be very prone to relying on our intellect and experience especially if it something that we have done quite a few times but God wants us to take it all to Him and seek His counsel and His will every step of the way. Excellent food for thought dear friend 💙.
